We believe that communication is vital to success
throughout each stage of every project, and especially at
the start. We invest a great deal of time listening to our
clients and understanding their needs and aspirations, the
way they like to live, what their priorities are, and then
focus on what we can add to this - things we’ve learned
through our training and experience that perhaps clients
haven’t considered and which may enhance their project.
It is not a matter of us imposing upon clients our “vision” or “style” of architecture, but rather understanding their needs and bringing something new and unique to the mix that will hopefully surprise and delight them.
We believe that collaboration and the free exchange of ideas is essential to achieving the best design outcomes. We have great respect for the contribution our consultants make to each project – builders, engineers, and all the trades involved. Each has a particular skill set and getting their creative input can add value to a project, often increasing cost efficiency and resulting in better design.
Our studio has developed close working relationships with several trusted landscapers, interior designers, artists and building and construction professionals who share our desire to provide high quality, personalised services for clients. We also have a strong network of professional relationships with other architects. These relationships are often a source of referral work, as well as a valuable source of knowledge and ideas.
We produce schematic design options that respond to the challenges and opportunities of the brief.

Experience & Qualifications:
Mary achieved a High Distinction average in her Bachelor of Design, and a Distinction average in her Master of Architecture courses at the University of Sydney. She was included in the Dean’s Honour Roll in 2010 and was chosen to be a student participant in the Glenn Murcutt Master Class in 2007.
In 2010 Mary participated as a construction volunteer in the architecture student project “EgresStudio’s 3 Houses at Pokolbin” (now known as The Long House, Pokolbin).
During and immediately following her studies, Mary worked for several architectural practices, both large and small, including Simpson + Wilson Architects, Eeles Trelease Architects, and HASSELL.
After being approached to take on several small to medium sized residential projects, Mary established her own practice with Arc Design Studio in 2012.
“Having my own studio allows me to be across every stage of the project and every element of the design, from the very beginning to the very end. My clients appreciate that they can always speak with me directly about any questions, ideas or concerns they have throughout the life of the project. It is an enormously satisfying way to practice design.”

When this property was purchased in 2009, it had only been partially renovated. A contemporary 2 storey extension had been constructed at the rear, but the previous owners sold it before completing the internal fit out and restoration of the front façade. Arc Design Studio was engaged to complete the project, overseeing the installation of customised joinery, fixtures and fittings, interior decoration, extensive landscaping works and to obtain planning approval for the construction of a landscaped off street parking space. The property was subsequently sold for a record breaking price in 2014.
The courtyards and trellises of southern France inspired this elegant pergola. The client had commissioned FG Design, a French design firm, (www.fgdesign.fr) to prepare the original design and construction drawings, which were then adapted by Arc Design Studio and local structural engineers to accommodate the on-site conditions and meet the requirements of the local planning authority.
A seemingly simple project was made more challenging because the house is located in a heritage conservation zone. We were able to assist the client in obtaining the expert reports and other documentation required by Council to gain planning approval for this project.
The project has transformed an exposed courtyard that was largely unusable into a peaceful outdoor room, providing an extension of the living area and protection from the harsh northeasterly aspect.
Prior to commencement of internal renovations designed by another designer, Arc Design Studio was called into make substantial alterations to these designs, manage the project and coordinate the interior decoration. We were subsequently briefed to design renovations to the existing pool and entertaining areas.
Using the relatively narrow space between the pool and fence that had contained garden beds and a disused water feature, we were able to create luxurious poolside seating with concealed storage for pool toys, new lighting and a pool shower.
This thoughtful design strategy, which recycled the existing timber screens, and the addition new pool and paving tiles has transformed the quality of the space.
The first stage of this project has involved significant alterations to restore the gracious proportions and details of this beautiful Arts & Crafts home, many of which had been lost during previous unsympathetic renovations. These works included restoring the original high ceilings on the first floor, restoring the entrance foyer, replacing doors, reinstating period fireplaces, renovating bathrooms, and initial landscaping works. We are currently working on the second of three stages of works planned for this home, which will include alterations to create a new kitchen and informal dining area opening onto a landscaped front courtyard.
When our clients purchased this partially renovated semi, there was development approval for a second storey addition that included two children’s bedrooms and a bathroom. Before purchasing the property, our clients consulted us to see if it was possible to reconfigure the plans to accommodate their need for a larger master bedroom with en suite bathroom and a study. We were able to rework the design to meet their needs within the constraints of the existing development approval saving them the time and expense of lodging a new development application. We subsequently designed and obtained development approval for additional alterations, including an internal garage, laundry and wine cellar on the lower ground level and landscaping works.
